Applications

  • Bone implant – as reinforcing material; coating on titanium, biomimetric material for biodegradable implants
  • Nanocarriers for drug delivery
  • Biosensor applications
  • Implantable electronic devices for stimulating human nervous system
  • Antistatic coatings for implantable electronic devices

Graphene was successfully coupled with Titanium and Hydroxyapatite to form strong Material as composite for bone regeneration.

With its attractive electrical conductivity properties and its large surface to volume ratio, graphene has always presented an attractive possibility to develop new generations of biosensors.

Graphene is the ideal candidate to achieving targeted and controlled drugs deliveries alike. Targeted Drug Delivery refers here to the process of delivering a drug to a specific site in the body where it has the greatest effect, instead of allowing it to diffuse to various sites where it may cause damage or trigger side effects. And Controlled Drug Delivery is one which drug is delivered at a predetermined rate, and for a specific period of time

Graphene addresses all the limitations of existing nano-carriers/particles by offering (1) superior large surface to volume ratio, thus enhanced interactions sites; (2) release drugs in a controlled manner; (3) more efficient uptake by cells; and (4) improved stability and therapeutic index.

Such applications that can leverage the unique properties of graphene are cancer, cell and gene therapies, where graphene-based nanomaterials functionalized with known biopolymers can be successfully loaded with several drugs to achieve a precise targeted treatment. Poorly soluble substances can then be conjugated with graphene, and its derivatives, to increase their solubility and stability without losing their efficiency.

Other applications which will also benefit include, to name but a few: diagnostics and biosensors; tissue engineering; biomarker.
